One thing that can improve both the lifespan of the windows and the R-value of them, as well as cut down on window maintenance needs over time, is to add a well fitting storm window on top of your wooden windows. A triple track storm window allows for 2 glass panels to keep out the cold or heat, and a third screen sash so you can get fresh air on nice days minus the bug bois. There are several different brands that we use and recommend. Depending on specific sizes and colors and brands there is variation in pricing.
We can source storm windows which are able to be installed on historic tax credit jobs, and have a low profile and line the meeting rails up with the window meeting rails to reduce jarring visual issues that detract from the charm of your old wooden windows. These types look really nice and we like to use them on non historic buildings as well because they elevate the aesthetic.
